Converge seeks 100 most promising academic innovators

Converge has officially launched its 2025 programme, seeking 100 exceptional researchers, creators and inventors from across Scotland’s universities to apply for a coveted place.

As the only programme of its kind in Scotland, Converge empowers academic innovators to translate cutting-edge research into real-world solutions by driving impact through entrepreneurship.

Successful applicants to this year’s Converge programme will join a diverse cohort of university founders embarking on a transformative journey to bring their innovations to life. They will also benefit from expert business training designed specifically for academic entrepreneurs, business connections, one-to-one guidance and the opportunity to compete for more than £300,000 in cash prizes and in-kind business support from Converge’s network of professional partners.

For many of the academic innovators who have already been through the Converge programme, positive societal and environmental impact rather than simply financial gain are the main drivers. One such example is Professor Emanuele Trucco, co-founder of Eye to the Future and runner-up in the Converge Challenge category at the 2022 Converge Awards.

Born from 20 years of collaborative research between the Universities of Dundee and Edinburgh, Eye to the Future has developed clinical software tools that aim to help optometrists make more accurate referral decisions at a time when NHS ophthalmology waiting lists have grown by 138% since 2012.

This focus on addressing critical societal needs aligns perfectly with this year’s Converge application drive which emphasises the diverse motivations of academic entrepreneurs including addressing societal challenges, creating positive environmental change, and improving people’s lives through the application of their research.

Eligible participants from this year’s Converge cohort will also be able to apply for a range of sector-specific standalone prizes including a new Blue Economy Award with a £35,000 prize fund. Designed to help the urgent transition to a sustainable ocean economy, Converge is looking for bold innovation and transformative solutions that balance economic growth with the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems.

Adam Kosterka, Converge executive director, comments:

“As we launch our 2025 programme, we’re looking for the next generation of academic entrepreneurs who can transform their research, ideas and inventions into successful, sustainable businesses.

Whether your ambition lies in mitigating climate change, addressing global health crises, or fostering a more equitable society, Converge provides the skills, tools and knowledge to help you transform your idea into a thriving business.

This is your invitation to become part of a dynamic community of innovators who are shaping our future. Apply today and let’s build a better tomorrow”
