The world generates over two billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, a staggering figure compounded by the fact that less than 20% is recycled globally. A key bottleneck in the recycling process is waste sorting – a complex, dirty, and dangerous task. The ever-increasing volume and complexity of waste, coupled with issues like contamination, hazardous materials and low financial returns, creates a challenging environment for waste management companies

Recognising the urgent need for a solution, Xiaoyan (Amy) Ma, a seasoned tech lead with a deep-rooted passion for environmental sustainability, founded Danu Robotics in 2020. The Edinburgh-based cleantech company reached the finals of the Converge programme in 2022 and is now at the forefront of developing robotic solutions to transform the waste management industry.

Danu’s core offering is a proprietary robotic system integrating AI and machine learning to automate the sorting process. Designed to integrate seamlessly into existing waste management facilities, the company’s patented robotic systems accurately identify and quickly separate various dry, mixed recyclables while working 365 days per year in challenging conditions.

A prime example of how innovation in robotics and AI can drive meaningful change in the environmental sector, Danu aims to set the industry standard by delivering the most efficient, most cost-effective waste sorting solutions in the marketplace. With our planet facing an escalating waste crisis, the need for transformative solutions like Danu’s have never been more urgent.
