E.V.A Biosystems is developing selectively degradable plastics for packaging. By incorporating synthetic biological constructs within conventional plastics, the company is working to produce plastics that can detect if they are in a specific environment, such as seawater or landfill, and degrade themselves in response.

This approach aims to provide a pragmatic solution to plastic pollution, improving end-of-life outcomes for products without compromising the benefits that made plastic so widespread in the first place. R&D is still in its early phases, however E.V.A Biosystems has already produced 3D printable plastics that can detect and respond to seawater equivalent concentrations of salt.
